The president said the vessel was carrying corn and that the crew included citizens of Azerbaijan and India. The captain is dead. Another crew member was wounded. One person’s fate is unknown. Eleven were rescued.
Zelensky said Ukraine has repeatedly offered concrete steps to de-escalate and secure the Black Sea, and that third countries have made proposals too. Russia, he said, keeps choosing terror and the sinking of civilian ships over normal navigation. Pressure is needed to restore global food security, and anyone who cares about that should help.
Reuters identified the ship as the cargo vessel Royad Mammadov. Romania’s Interior Ministry released footage of the rescue near its waters.
