France deploys 70,000 police and gendarmes for Saturday’s new cost-of-living protests, a week after the worst unrest in years.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the deployment is about 20% larger than on Oct. 17, with elite units (RAID, GIGN and Paris’s BRI), about 20 armored vehicles, 15 water cannon, helicopters and drones. He warned of social media calls for violence and looting and said police would be "inflexible." Paris police banned the Bastille-Nation march route, a curfew runs from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. around Place de la République and Les Halles through Monday, and the Louvre and other major museums are closed. Many shops in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux have boarded up windows.
Last Saturday, some 500,000 marched; authorities said nearly 1,000 police were injured and more than 3,000 shops were looted or damaged.
The government’s warnings of looting rest on social media calls and last week’s violence, not on any confirmed plan. I found no announced protest in Belgium for Saturday; Brussels and Liège saw clashes on Oct. 9 and Oct. 17.
